Huishoud apparatuur connector oplossingen

50 Years Ago at the Founding of Lumberg Netherlands – Part 6: Household Appliances

Drip Coffee Maker

In 1972, the first drip coffee machine for home use was launched in the U.S. It was called Mr. Coffee. It was an immediate success, making this method of brewing coffee very popular.

Mr. Coffee was brought to market by Vincent Marotta. Unlike later models, this original version—with its distinctive yellow and white checkered sticker—used gravity to pull water through a heating element and let it drip freely into the carafe below. The famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio later became the face of the brand.

Adoption of New Appliances

The introduction of household products in the 20th century wasn’t always seamless. Irons, vacuum cleaners, radios, and glass recycling bins were quickly adopted by consumers. This was because these products met existing needs and fit well into everyday life.

On the other hand, appliances that consumers didn’t find useful—such as electric butter dishes, wine baskets, cigar lighters, milk boilers, and candle warmers—did not survive in the long run.

While electric companies lost the battle to gas producers in the 20th century for cooking appliances, it’s clear that in the 21st century, the tide is turning in favor of electricity.

Throughout its history, Lumberg has been a key player in developing, producing, and supplying connector solutions for household appliance manufacturers.
