50 Years Since the Founding of Lumberg Nederland - Part 2: Audio
50 years ago, in October 1972, Lumberg Nederland was established as a branch of the German Lumberg. This milestone marks a significant chapter in our history, and throughout this year, we’ll be revisiting key moments in our rich past. In this series, "What Else Happened in 1972," we present part 2: Audio.
Music
Luxembourgish singer Vicky Leandros won the Eurovision Song Contest in Edinburgh with her song “Après toi.”

Quadraphonic Sound
This year also saw the release of the CD4, or Quadradisc, version of four-channel vinyl LPs for quadraphonic sound. Quadraphonic sound is a four-channel system, with the amplifier containing a decoder to split the four channels across four speakers. CD4 was JVC and RCA Records’ response to CBS Records’ earlier SQ system, sparking a fierce competition in the HiFi audio market.

This technology can be considered a precursor to Dolby Prologic. The turntable also featured a four-channel cartridge with a special “Shibata” stylus designed for CD4 records.
Quadraphonic sound created an impressive audio experience, moving sound from speaker to speaker to utilize all four channels, similar to what we now call surround sound.
